Thank God for Breast Cancer!

My story starts in Italy…I was born and raised there. ln my late teen years I decided to come to the States to learn English...it was love at first sight!

My life has been one of curiosity, travel, and discovery…I lived in Italy, Lebanon, and Switzerland. In the US I have lived in Boston, Tucson, and New York City. Yes Tucson…quite random, I know!  but what an experience.  To this day, nothing fascinates me more than the Sonora Desert’s night or cacti in bloom! I finally landed in New York where I have built the last 24 years of my life! I dove into the excitement and energy (and rat race) of the city that doesn’t sleep and loved it.

However, the most "interesting" part of my life started in 2010 after an aggressive metastatic breast cancer diagnosis. Yes, it was scary….scary as hell! But also, the best thing that could have happened to me.

Not once did I ask, “Why me?” but rather “How do I get passed it”….and passed it I went!

After a series of surgeries (including a double mastectomy), chemo, and radiation that seemed to last forever, I decided to make small changes to improve my health. Those changes had a powerful impact; The mind, and later body shifts, were incredible and fast!

Little did I know that my life would turn around in such a short time and bring so much strength, love, growth, and happiness. I started with changing my eating habits; that was the beginning of a new life, and a new me.

The journey has taught me that big and lasting improvement doesn’t take much. It only takes a starting point and a little consistency. The more I implemented positive changes, the more I looked for them, and the more they "came" to me. It was a natural and organic progression toward all that is good…

I now am cancer free and happier and healthier than ever! I've learned to become determined and resilient. I recently graduated as an Integrative Health Coach, and I hope to use this blog to share what I have learned. I will provide tips, ideas, and suggestions on improving our daily life, mental and physical health, and reducing stress.

Hope you enjoy it!

Gene mutations, Epigenetics, and HAPPY THOUGHTS!

Epigenetics, Gene mutations, and HAPPY THOUGHTS!   Nowadays, epigenetics has gained significant popularity as a subject of interest. My personal fascination with it began some time ago and further deepened through my studies at the Institute for Integrative Nutrition. This topic holds particular significance for me due to my diagnosis of a gene mutation back in 2015. However, now that I have a better understanding of this subject, I choose to refer to it as a gene “variation”, a term that feels much more comforting to me. Gene Mutation   The gene variation I possess indicates a possible increased risk of developing breast, ovarian, or pancreatic cancer. Just when I believed I was finally overcoming my battle against metastatic breast cancer, receiving this news felt utterly disheartening. The moment I was presented with the test results, I thought there was only one choice I could make, one way out to preserve my sanity. Within a week of unco...

The Importance of Sleep: Consequences of Sleep Deprivation and Tips for a Restful Night

The night hours can seem endless: These past couple of months have been particularly difficult for me on a personal and professional level. As I was doing my best to manage a crushing amount of stress, I was losing the ability to turn my mind off at the end of the day. This led to many sleepless nights that ultimately exacerbated the stress. It became a vicious cycle difficult to break. One of the key teachings at the Integrative Institute for Nutrition is that consuming organic, whole foods, will not suffice to achieve well-being and homeostasis if we are too stressed; stress will always disrupt the balance. Thanks to the practical techniques I learned, and a bit of trial and error, I successfully restored a healthy sleeping routine. Experiencing firsthand the consequences of sleep deprivation has provided me with a fresh understanding of the great importance of a restful night's sleep.   For me it was a brief period in time, however for most people who have fast-paced and busy l...
